Trough Buildand Design Workshop
Monday, August 8 through Friday, August 12. 

I will be building and designing various troughs from hypertufa all week.  You will be able to do the same.  You will learn how to mix the ingredients, mold the trough (birdbath or whatever) and cure result along with me.  Bring any plastic or foam container that will create a shape you will like.  A straight sided foam cooler is a good example of a possible mold, or a dishpan, catpan or salad bowl could be used.  Mardens and discount stores are good sources for various shapes and sizes.  A few molds will be available for you to use. Troughs may be taken home after they set up.  This may take a few days to a week, depending on the weather.  Troughs are very fragile until they set up.

Constructing lightweight troughs, or containers, for plants and numerous other uses, is a craft that has caught the eye of many an astute gardener. This kind of container gardening was indeed the rage in England of the 1920's and 1930's, used for growing alpine (mountain) plants. Numerous articles have appeared in almost every gardening magazine over the past few years, and articles continue to appear in national gardening magazines. Unlimited sites on the internet are devoted to, or deal with, the subject of hypertufa and its uses. Hands on learning, step by step, is often the easiest way to begin. Cost for the workshop is $35.00 each for a medium sized container.  For larger projects, it will depend on the amount of materials needed.  Bring rubber gloves if you are allergic to latex. Let's have some fun playing in the mud!
