Sunnyside Gardens / The Gardens
Entering through the garden gate, you will walk through the pink garden first. This garden came to be because a well established Beauty Bush was already there providing a great back drop. Surrounded with an English twig fence, deep red and burgundy highlights contrast well with lighter tones of the same hue. Some variegated foliage adds interest as well. As the season progresses, perennial highlights come and go while annuals insure the color is always a strong feature.
The first spring flowers at Sunnyside are the drifts of creeping phlox that line the driveway along the 1814 cape part of the house. In front of the 1840's federal addition, lilacs, tulips and dwarf iris welcome the new season. The herb garden is always a pleasant place to scratch and sniff as you stroll through. Stepping down from it, the gray garden features lavender, iris, curly chives, and Russian sage. Hosta beds highlight the many ways Hosta can be mixed and matched and send you scurrying to the sales area to see if the one you like the best is currently available. All summer long, wonderful plant combinations in the gardens give you glorious ideas to take home.
More to come.........
Blooming today, April 29, 2007 in the rain -
The Magnolia is showing about half, Iris reticulata, Scilla sibirica and tubergiana, hepaticas, February Daphne smelling like my grandmother's soap. The forsythia are trying. But, the most beautiful sight to my mind is the maple blossoms, they have the best color at the moment. This is the time of year to watch the buds swell. Do it!
